Forward progress in Comet-land
The mood is pretty chipper in Jonesville, as the Comets football team tries to get back to .500 this Friday with a win over conference foe Springport.
Head coach Joshua Lindeman said last Friday's 27-14 road win over Athens was a great example of the resiliency his kids embody.
"It just goes to show you the character of the kids we have," he said. "Our kids can show back up after a tough loss and that's exactly what they did."
What was most promising was that the Comets' rushing attack finally took off like Lindeman was hoping it would.
They ran the ball 35 times for 346 yards, almost 10 yards per carry.
John Sigler ran 13 times for 214 yards and scored all four of the Comets touchdowns. Trevor Kelley added 101 yards rushing and Dominic Mulkey tallied 45.
After airing out the ball quite a bit in a week two loss, Comets QB Spencer Nielsen was at his best just handing the ball off against the Indians.
He was 1-for-3 for 12 yards.
"We wanted to get the ball down field a few times, but got sacked," Lindeman said. "But really, if our rushing attack is working like it did Friday, then I'm happy just keeping the ball on the ground."
With their playoff hopes still alive, Lindeman said he was proud of the effort his defense gave last week, one he hopes they can build on.
Athens came into the contest averaging more than 300 yards rushing per game, but the Comets limited them to 147 yards on more than 50 carries.
"We are making a lot of fundamental improvements, especially on getting off blocks and tackling," Lindeman said. "We're getting better every practice I feel like."
Jonesville has lost its last five meetings with Springport, who has started the year 0-3 with two losses of a touchdown or less.

Volleyball
N A-J  3, Waldron 0
The Rams continued their hot play with a straight sets win in Waldron Tuesday night, 25-19, 25-7, 25-10.
The usual key Rams led the way, as Kristen Trudell had 23 assists and six aces and Miranda Hammons had 10 kills, 9 digs and six aces.
Shannen Kittle added 10 digs and Katelyn Smith had five kills.
"They just did a great job of digging up our serves and making plays all night," Waldron head coach Amanda Davis said.
Chelsea Shadbolt had seven service points for Waldron.
Mackenzie Price attempted 28 sets and Kelsey Knowlan attempted 23 sets for the Spartans.

Pittsford 3, Tekonsha 0
Pittsford cruised to an easy victory in its SCAA opener with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-16 win over Tekonsha.
Brittany Houser paced the Rams with 16 kills and Sam Nichols had 26 assists and nine digs.
Katelyn Kipfmiller tallied seven kills and six aces, while Ashley Buckner had five kills and three digs.

Quincy  3, Reading 1
The crosstown showdown went to the Orioles Tuesday.
They beat the Rangers 25-13, 25-12, 23-25, 25-19.
Head coach Dean Neitzert said his team controlled the ball effectively and communicated well and the stats agree with him.
Alex Neitzert tallied 14 kills and 15 digs, while Deanna O'Dell had 20 digs.
Amanda Waligora had 14 digs.
Sara Burge had 24 assists and Kelsey Letendre totaled 13 assists for the Orioles, who are 1-0 in the Big Eight and 9-11-1 overall.

Maples wipe out Hornets
Adrian beat a young Hillsdale squad 7-1 at the Hornets' home courts Tuesday.
The lone winner for Hillsdale was senior Nick Bumpus at third singles by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
Junior Brandon Miller played a great match but came up just a few points short of victory when he lost both sets in a tie breaker 7-6, 7-6
Hillsdale falls to 0-4 and Adrian improves to 1-4
