After a week of solid practice Mike Curby showed why he is so important to the fortunes of the Hillsdale Hornets football team this year.
The senior ran for 141 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Hornets to 35-6 league win over Parma Western Friday night at Baumgarten Stadium.
The win put some life in their slim playoff hopes and stalled the Panthers' for a week.
Hillsdale is now 1-1 in the SMAA and 1-3 overall. Parma falls to 1-1 and 3-1.
“We still have a lot of possibilities,” said Parma coach Al Ennis.
After missing the first two games with an injured hand, Curby had a rough debut last week at Stockbridge.
Friday night he demonstrated his health is improving with an impressive command of the offense and defense. In addition to his rushing, he completed 4-of-8 passes for 65 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.
On defense Curby pressured his counterpart and had nine solo tackles.
“Going on last week, he only had two days of snaps,” Hornet coach Marc Lemerand said about Curby. 'This time he had a full week.”
Lemerand believes this is only the start of something good for his quarterback.
“As we go along he is going to get better,” Lemerand said. “I always felt we were close, it was a challenge, but the kids were confident in the scheme.”
The Hornet defense overall dominated the Panthers, limiting them to just 192 yards total offense and keeping them pinned down in their half most of the night. Hillsdale's defenders had four sacks and nine tackles for loss. Ennis said that was key to the game.
“We knew they would be well coached,” said Ennis. “They hadn't had a chance to gain some positive momentum.We knew coming in here they would play hard and come at us.”
Lemerand appreciated it as well.
“I thought the kids executed a lot better,” he said. “Each week we are trying to get better.”
The Hornets got some clutch play from Aaron Blanchard who filled in for Nick Reiniche in the backfield, rushing 14 times for 119 yards and catching one ball for four yards.
“Blanchard stepped in for Nick and ran ball well,” Lemerand said. “He also made some blocks on some of Mike's runs that won't show up in the paper.
Sonny McCoy had the best hit of the night nailing a Panther runner on a kick return in the first half.
The only stat that impressed no one was the 18 flags for 161 yards by the home team. Parma was called 11 times for 75 yards.
Notes: Hillsdale has now won 10 straight games against Parma Western and own a 12-3 all-time series lead …The Hornets had their first lead of the season when Curby scored from 19 yards out with 4:39 left in the half …After giving up 95 points in their first two games, Hillsdale has allowed only 16 in its last two …Hillsdale will host Leslie next week.
