Rams fall to St. Phil in straight sets
North Adams-Jerome gave one of Class D's best programs a run for their money for about 20 minutes, but ended falling in straight sets at home Thursday.
The Tigers were victorious 25-23, 25-9, 25-15 as the Rams fell to 6-3 overall this season.
"It's an experience that's for sure," N A-J head coach Darren Kittle said. "They are just huge, they are relentless on defense and I know we'll be watching this tape and learning from it the next few practices."
Miranda Hammons had a strong night for the Rams, tallying 15 digs and seven kills and Kristen Trudell added 15 assists and three digs.
Shannon Kittle had 20 digs and Mallory Trumble tallied four kills.
Redskins get back on winning track
Things weren't going as planned for Camden-Frontier so far this season and head coach Dawn Follis wasn't afraid to change things up.
She changed her serve-receive rotation, she changed her lineup and she changed formations — and apparently it worked, at least the first time out.
The Redskins beat Climax-Scotts twice in a doubleheader, 25-20, 25-20 and (22-25), 25-15, 25-15 and Follis was ecstatic.
"It was really good to see because we've made a lot of changes and I was kind of nervous about how we would look," she said. "But we had to do something because we weren't winning anyways so what's the harm in trying to fix things and put girls in a position to succeed?"
Megan Schwartzengraber had a big night with 25 digs, five kills and five aces, while Morgan Warfield added 19 assists and 10 kills.
Effie Spieth had 15 digs and Jessica Hines was good for nine assists, nine kills and six aces.
Danielle Abney contributed 18 kills and three aces and Jackie Parker put down nine kills.
The Redskins are now 5-4-2 overall.
Cross country
Locals place well at Springport
Local boys and girls littered the standings at the 35-team Springport cross country invitational Wednesday.
The only area team running in Division II was Quincy, and the Orioles boys took seventh and the girls finished sixth.
Brett Palmer took 14th in the boys race with a time of 19:21 and in the girls event Kristen Scott took 20th in a time of 22:23 and Megan Karney placed 30th.
In division III the Jonesville Comets made some noise, placing fourth in the boys competition and second in the girls reace.
Four Comet boys placed in the top 30: Charlie Bryner (12th, 19:16), Damien Nickels (18th, 19:40), Brad Bryner (26th, 20:08) and Ty Myers (27th, 20:09).
On the girls side the entire Jonesville team was in the top 25 and they were 23 points behind first-place Concors (58-81).
Holly Taylor was the top Comet finisher with a 12th place showing in a time of 23:27 and teammate Rachel Mayhew was right behind her in 13th with a 23:35. The other Comet girls finished as follows: Jessica Miller (15th, 24:09), Brandy Deen (16th, 24:10) and Andrea Hess (25th, 25:08).
Reading and Will Carleton Academy also had good performances in both races.
The Rangers Damien Davenport took ninth with an 18:34, and teammates Austin Wigent and Brad Stewart were 10th and 13th respectively, with times of 18:42 and 19:24.
In the girls event, Rangers runners Kelsey Duryea and Brittany Couch took 30th and 31st, with times of 25:31 and 25:36.
From Will Carleton Academy, Joel Wheeler was 24th in the boys race and Kristen Westblade was 36th in the girls event.
