Academy takes second at home jamboree
Local runners dominated the Top 10 at the SCAA Jamboree at Owens Park in Hillsdale, but a pair of teams from outside the county were victorious at the end of the afternoon.
Bellevue knocked off runner-up Hillsdale Academy 46-56 in the boys race, gaining some ground on the Colts in the competition for an SCAA regular season title.
Colon (96) took third, Waldron (107) was fourth and Pittsford took sixth with 139 points.
Litchfield (205) placed seventh and Camden-Frontier was 11th with 307 points.
Waldron senior Blake Fix paced the field by 18 seconds with a run of 16:48, beating runner-up Brent Smith of Pittsford (17:06).
Three Academy runners placed in the Top 10 to lead the Colts: Joel Calvert (5th, 17:31), Andrew Alvarez (6th, 17:39) and Joe Craig (8th, 18:06).
Waldron senior Fletcher Masters was 12th in a time of 18:14.
In the girls event, Battle Creek St. Phil kept a stronghold on first place in the league, with 50 points, beating second place Hillsdale Academy by 16.
Waldron finished third with 91 points, Pittsford was a point back in fifth and Litchfield and Camden-Frontier were seventh and 10th respectively.
The top local finisher was the Colts Shaley Albaugh in second, who turned in a time of 20:49, 23 seconds behind the winning runner from St. Phil.
Pittsford's Elainee Poling took third with a time of 21:00 and teammate Morgan McFaul was fifth with a time of 21:24.
Three other Academy girls placed in the Top 15: Elizabeth Brady was eighth with a 21:45, Erin Gieseke was 10th with a time of 22:05 and Chrissy Craig placed 11th (22:18).
Waldron's Taylor Price was ninth.
With the final SCAA Jamboree set for Oct. 20 at Pittsford the league standings now look like this: On the boys side it is: 1. Hillsdale Academy 4 points, 2. Bellevue 6, 3. Colon 8, 4. St. Phil 14, 4. Waldron 14, 6. Pittsford; On the girls side it is: 1. St. Phil 3, Hillsdale Academy 7, 3. Bellevue 9, 4. Pittsford 13, 4. Waldron 13.
Concord wins jamboree in Reading
Concord was victorious in both the boys and girls races at the Big 8 Jamboree in Reading Tuesday, but Reading, Quincy and Jonesville all earned podium finishes.
In the boys meet Concord had the top four finishers to dominate the field (20 points) and Reading and Jonesville took second and third with 89 and 93 points respectively.
Kyle Stacks of Concord won the race in a time of16:57.
Reading's Austin Wigent (18:33) and Damien Davenport (18:34) took fifth and sixth, while Brett Palmer of Quincy was seventh with a time of 18:41.
On the girls side Quincy took second and Jonesville third.
The overall winner was Nicki Wurster of Homer, with a time of 20:46.
Jonesville's Rachel Mayhew placed fourth (22:18), while a trio of Quincy girls placed in the top 10 — Megan Karney in fifth (22:22), Kirstin Scott in sixth (23:02) and Jenny Summitt in eighth (23:17).

Comets rout Bellevue to tie for second in ISL
A bunch of youngsters got some playing time and Jonesville emptied the bench, in an 8-0 win over Bellevue Wednesday.
"I like it because you just get to get the young guys on the field," Jonesville head coach Pat Bernklau said. "And with Onsted beating the Academy the other day we end up in a tie for second in the league, instead of being third, which makes me happy."
More than a few guys made Bernklau happy Wednesday.
Sophomore Nick Ballinger had a hat trick with two goals in the first half and another in the second.
"I think he will fit right into Adam (Thorp's) spot real well next year hopefully," Bernklau said.
Thorp had two goals and two assists himself, while Caleb Brown was good for two goals and an assist.
Chad McOscar had a goal and two assists, Derreck Dobbs had two assists and Matt Martinez added an assist.
The Comets finish the regular season 12-5-1, with a 5-2 mark in the ISL.

Comets beat Rangers in Big 8 classic
Tuesday's conference battle between Jonesville and Reading went late into the night, but it was worth it for the Comets.
They downed Reading 25-19, 15-25, 23-25, 25-16, 17-15. The Comets took an early lead in the match and then Reading came back strong and determined winning the next two sets.
In the third set Comet setter Jenna Kast set the pace for the rest of the match with extremely tough serving and some exceptionally executed kills, according to Jonesville head coach Debbie Proctor-Bigelow.
Shaila Rossman led the Comets with 16 kills, 14 digs and five blocks. Kast added 27 assists, 13 kills and 10 aces. Other Comets contributers on the night were Olivia Rowe with 11 kills, Brianna Aemisigger with seven kills and Chelsea Taylor with 34 digs.
The Comets are now 2-2 in the Big Eight and round out the week traveling to Tecumseh on Thursday.
Rams sweep Bobcats
North Adams-Jerome, the No. 4 team in the state in latest Class D rankings, had no trouble with Burr Oak Tuesday, beating them 25-11, 25-16 and 25-19, 25-7 in a double-header.
Kristen Trudell led the way with 48 assists and Shannen Kittle added 24 digs.
Miranda Hammons tallied 17 kills and 14 digs and Katelyn Smith had 11 kills.
The Rams are now 24-3 overall and 9-0 in the SCAA East. Ranked 4th in class D.
Orioles outlast Spartans
Quincy stayed perfect in Big Eight play Tuesday, with a victory over Springport, 25-23, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20.
Kelsey Letendre had 18 assists and six kills for the Orioles, while Alix Neitzert was good for 13 digs and nine kills.
Sara Burge added 18 assists and Joslyn Dwyer had 14 kills.
The Orioles are 23-9-3 overall 4-0 in the conference.
