Frank Beck Chevrolet and seven other local business and organizations are sponsoring one of mid-Michigan's largest buck poles on the first two days of deer hunting season, and Jerome Country Market owner Pam Griffis expects several hundred people to participate.
Last year the pole brought in 134 participants despite constant rain both days.
Griffis said there are six different categories to submit bucks and does in, and drawings for prizes will be held in each.
While hunters will be interested in who can shoot down the biggest and heaviest, the contest does not reward size.
“If you say it's all about the biggest or heaviest, than people wouldn't come bring there's if they didn't think it could compete,” Griffis said. “We like to make it more of a family atmosphere and community oriented. We thinks it's good that a kid gets excited about his six point, even if it's not as big as a lot of the others.”
The categories for the drawings are as follows: men's buck pole, women's buck pole, youth buck pole (16 and under), men's doe pole, women's doe pole and youth doe pole.
Griffis said the prizes will consist of “a lot of guns”, cross bows, deer blinds and plenty other of hunting equipment.
The drawings will take place at 7 and 8 p.m. Monday evening.
Last year Jerome Country Market processed more than 3,400 deer and Griffis said she expects to do at least that much business this year.
There is no fee to enter the Buck Pole, and there will be vendors on site offering concessions both days.
