Comets whiz past Tigers on the road
Jonesville head coach Dustin Scharer saw something he could exploit when he watched Hudson face Hillsdale last Friday, and his instincts didn’t lie, as Jonesville (2-0 overall) cruised past the Tigers 57-36 in Hudson Monday.
Scharer said he thought the Tigers were a little weak at handling the ball at times and a hefty amount of full-court pressure in the first half gave his team a 34-18 lead at the intermission, and they tallied 13 steals on the evening.
And on the other end of the floor Spencer Nielsen scored a career-high 21 points, including four 3-pointers, to go with a team-high six rebounds.
“He came out hot and got going early, and anytime you’re doing well on offense it gets you going defensively and I think that happened tonight,” Scharer said.
Nathan Smith led Hudson with 15 points and Sam Klinger added 11, but no other Tiger scored more than four points.
Scharer cut them some slack though.
“They’ve really only been playing basketball a few weeks and everybody kind of has a leg up on them because of how long their football season went on,” he said.
Mitch Miller added 10 points for the Comets and Chad McOscar put in eight.
Scharer said he’s happy with the size he has to work with and how the first two games have gone, but non-conference games are merely warmup dates for a run at a Big Eight title.
“Yeah, it’s good to see some promise, good to see some confidence, but we want to do some damage in the Big Eight and we’ll have to keep improving, keep working hard if we want to do that.”
League play begins Thursday for Jonesville when they head to Homer.

Colts are no match for Spartans
Waldron picked up its first win of the year Monday, running past 0-2 Hillsdale Academy 71-27.
Dylan Emens led all scorers with 19 points for Waldron and Casy Mohr pitched in with 11.
The Colts, who were playing without top scorer Peter Sullivan, who is out indefinitely with a back injury, were led by Chip Blood and Joe Craig, who had nine and eight points respectively.
“It is us learning on the fly,” Academy head coach Rick Milligan said. “We didn’t finish well tonight, we missed some layups and we have a lot of work to do.”
