The win means the Spartans (3-2 overall) will now aim for a fourth consecutive Paterson title trophy in the Don Eby pool when they face Reading at 8:15 p.m. tonight.
The Redskins hit 11 3-pointers in the contest and had a 22-10 lead at one point, but in the end the scrappier, more-consistent Spartans took control.
“A team like that, they’re going to take a lot of 3s and you just hope they start missing some eventually, and they did, fortunately for us,” Waldron head coach Mark Long said.
Brady Nusbaum and Kurtis Tyler both scored 14 for C-F, but that was nothing compared to the 26 point, 13-rebound effort put in by Waldron senior Dylan Emens.
He scored 18 of those points in the second half, beating defenders of the dribble and keeping his balance on tough baseline drives.
“He’s capable of doing that any night, I mean he’s been doing that for us all year. I won’t tell you what he’s been averaging, but he’s averaging quite a few points,” Long said. “He’s always been a good shooter and now he’s learned to dribble drive so that’s where he’s really stepped up this year.”
His stats might garner the most attention, but it was a Waldron freshman who helped turn things around in the third quarter.
Landon Fellows had nine points in the contest, and none bigger than a pair of quick buckets that helped Waldron seize the lead.
“The turning point was in the third quarter when our freshman Landon Fellows hit two back-to-back 3-point plays when we got it to him inside, and that was what really turned the game in our favor,” Long said. “Our guys have accepted him well.”
Danny Moore added nine points and 13 rebounds inside for the Spartans and Fletcher Masters chipped in seven points and three steals.
Nick Balbo scored eight for C-F.
