Ranger girls are 2-0 out of the gate on the hardwood

In a match-up of two teams trying to find their identities, the Reading Rangers held off a pesky Camden-Frontier team on the road, to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

The Redskins out-scored the Rangers by five points in the first quarter and seven in the third, but a 22-8 advantage for Reading in the second quarter proved to be the difference maker.

“We’re just trying to find out who can do what for us, and tonight I thought Camden showed they are a good team, but we were able to hold them off,” Reading head coach Ryan Mulnix said.

Jessica Fink had a solid all-around performance for the Rangers, with 11 points, nine rebounds, six steals and three assists, while Emily Sigler had a team-high 13 points.

Nicole Marsh and Alex Mailahn each tallied eight points and Tessa Pridgeon had six points, six rebounds and four steals.

Defensively the Rangers did all they could to contain C-F star Morgan Warfield, but the junior still had 19 points, to go with 13 rebounds and seven steals, despite the fact that Redskins head coach Melissa Warfield said her daughter was “being triple-teamed at times.”  

“She is just a ‘heckuva’ player and it’s a good thing we started out well, because they got better as the game went on,” Mulnix said.

Warfield’s teammate Jackie Parker equaled her with 19 points, as well as four steals and three rebounds, something coach Warfield hopes to see on a regular basis, since Parker and Warfield are two of the team’s three players who have any experience whatsoever at the varsity level.

“(Jackie) and Morgan both know they have to step up, but really I was happy about tonight, especially the way all of our young girls played,” Melissa Warfield said. “The biggest thing I love is they are all dying to get on that floor and do whatever it takes to try and win.”

Amanda Abney added four rebounds and three steals for the 0-1 Redskins.
