Tonight: College football isn't quite over yet Charger fans

As Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit signed off on ABC following last night's national title game, a collective sigh could be heard around the nation — college football wouldn't be back until late August.

Not so fast my fellow Hillsdalians. Lest we forget the Cactus Bowl tonight, featuring two of our own, including the home-grown (Hillsdale High) Drew Berube.

Placekicker Mark Petro and defensive lineman Drew Berube will suit up for the East Team at the 2010 game, scheduled to be played in Kingsville, Texas at 7:35 p.m. Eastern Time.

The game will be broadcast across several mediums, some easier to come by than others around this area. It will be carried on Fox College Sports Channel, and be viewable on DirecTV on channel 617. The game will be webcast through its host website, www.cactusbowl.org, and if for some reason you like shaky audio instead of a webcast, you can figure out a way to hack through to the Kingsville-area radio KCCT 1150 AM who will carry the radio call.

The Cactus Bowl has traditionally been known as the Division II Football "All-Star Game," and stocks its rosters with the best Division II players from across the country. Petro and Berube are the fourth and fifth players to represent Hillsdale College at the game since current head coach Keith Otterbein took over the program for the 2002 season.

Past participants in the game from Hillsdale have included offensive lineman Silas Johnson (2003), tight end Keith Recker (2006), quarterback Mark Nicolet (2008) and punter Matt Vanover (2008). Nicolet was named the game's Most Valuable Player two years ago.

Petro was named First-Team All-GLIAC after a senior season that saw him break every scoring and field goal record in the Chargers' record books. He set the single-season scoring record by a kicker with 108 points, and set a record for most field goals made in a season with 19.

Petro's career totals of 167 extra points, 49 field goals and 314 points are all-time records among kickers for a career. In 2009, he was ranked among the top three in field goals made per game throughout the season.

Seven other GLIAC players will join Berube and Petro on the East squad, including three Grand Valley State Lakers, and a name familiar to some in the area — Ferris State cornerback Angelo Williams, who was a star at Jackson High.
