I still don't believe we are precisely "what we eat" (thanks to a fast metabolism), because if that was true I'd have chocolate chip cookie eyes and licorice lips, not to mention some fried shrimp earrings. And we are certainly some of what we say — but who here can raise their hand and say they have never lied and their words are like a stream of gold profiting the world? (Put your hand down Pat Robertson) But what if it's just a little bit true that we are what we consume, in terms of the 24/7 media landscape, and in terms of what we hear and regurgitate because it matters to us?
If that's true than I'm probably a conservative liberal and Republican-leaning Democrat, because quite frankly I spend my time working, living and breathing searching for meaning, finding wisdom and humor many steps of the way. I'm not looking for a particular slant, I'm looking for reason and intelligent discussion.
Thus, I am birthing this new "Yeah, that's what I heard" enterprise on a spot I have usually reserved just for my professional work. I spend my days thinking mainly about God's purpose for the world and our lives, the crazy uncomprehendable domain of mainstream sports, and whatever other jumbled, eyebrow raising experiences encompass a given 24-hour segment.
This is the introduction to something I will be posting several times a week, maybe more. What I'd really like though is for you to add your own "Yeah, that's what I heard" experiences in the comments section. Because then — I will have just heard it as well and we can pass around our thinking hats.
GOD
"There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, in the end, 'Thy will be done.” —the premise of C.S. Lewis’ book The Great Divorce, which the leaders of Westwinds church in Jackson (where my wife and I attend) are going to be referring to during a series of sermons
“I think it’s rather like saying there may be machines that enable you to practice baseball by yourself—you know, a machine that will fling a ball at you and you hit it back. But in reality, if you want to learn how to play baseball, you have to have at least two other people and preferably even a few more than that. The thing we need to learn is that morality is rather like that. It isn’t just an individual thing. It is about how we work together.” — Author N.T. Wright on the character trait virtue embodied by today’s Christians; part of an
interview done by Religion News Services and published by an array of big-time news outlets
SPORTS
“I would try to do so much as to not even utter a word against the letter of the law if the sentence of the punishment was 2.5 hours in the back of a car or cab without any means to communicate!” — Mike Greenberg, on Mike and Mike in the Morning, talking about how Golic has been without his phone since Sunday and he can’t survive two minutes without his Crackberry
“Dez Bryant was barely a student at Oklahoma State and you want to call him a businessman? Did anyone watch Hard Knocks on HBO? Ochocinco didn’t even know how a bank worked….Dez Bryant is as close to a businessman as I am to being a transgendered film critic.” —Colin Cowherd on The Herd, referring to a comment by NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith, where he said his men need to be treated professionally in interviews, as businessmen should be
"I know that he can't just retire. I'm like, 'Honey, what are you going to do? Are you going to help your kids go change diapers and stuff?’” — Los Angeles Lakers Vice President Jeannie Buss on her former boyfriend and Lakers head coach Phil Jackson, and the
Hall of Fame head coach’s options for next year
“I think they should say something that it was inappropriate, but like I said man, I don’t think…I have a rule on television that I never say somebody should get fired. Even if they do something stupid. It was stupid, it was uncalled for, in no situation is it acceptable. An apology is what you can do, but it’s just unacceptable. But like I said, I’m not going to go off on no tangent about this guy’s got to be fired. I’m going to leave that to Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.” — NBA on TNT analyst Charles Barkley on Don LeBatard’s radio show, talking about Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland asking NFL prospect Dez Bryant “Is your mother a prostitute?” during a pre-draft interview
LIFE
“Hi, sir, did you just call and place an order a few minutes ago? You do realize we’re Pizano’s, not Domino’s, right? We can still get you a good deal, but there hasn’t been a Domino’s in Jackson for a few years.” — Pizano’s worker on the phone, two minutes after I asked for their two medium two-topping pizza for $5.99 apiece, “just like I saw on the commercial.” Unfortunately Pizano’s phone number is precisely Domino’s old phone number. Nonetheless the pizza was scrumptious and actually a dollar less. SCORE.
