With an eye on the immediate future, the Albion City Council elected a 23-year-old Albion High School and Princeton University graduate to the 3rd Precinct seat.
Going up against former city council member Ken Waito and a pair of other Albion residents for the seat vacated by Thorland Bradley last month, Garrett Brown was council’s unanimous selection in part because of his energy and action-oriented vision.
“It’s nice to see someone that’s a product of Albion today, that goes to college, comes back and is interested,” council member Andy Zblewski said. “We need to know what’s Albion in the future, and I think he has some insight into that.”
Brown said he recently spoke to more than 60 residents in the 3rd Precinct who said their primary concerns are improved communication between the city and residents, economic development and city-student relations.
He said collecting input outside of meetings is important. Brown majored in religion, ethics and politics at Princeton and he said the opportunity to take on challenges was too great to pass up.
“I just felt that I couldn’t continue to make excuses or complain about situations without at least trying to make a difference,” he said.
Seven residents publicly declared their support for Brown before the applicants spoke. Scott Brown of the Calhoun County Road Commission was one and commended council for giving the 2005 Albion High School graduate a chance.
“Thank you for electing the person Precinct 3 residents came to advocate for (Monday night),” he said. “It means a great deal to us that you heard us, and we appreciate it.”
