The board voted unanimously Monday to give the 38-year-old Koziol the opportunity to take over the job vacated by David Tebo, who accepted the position of the superintendent of Hamilton Community Schools. Koziol serves as Jackson County Intermediate School District education consultant.
Brady Cook, principal at Michigan Center Junior High School, and high school athletic director Greg Pscodna also showed interest in the position.
“We know (Cook and Pscodna) bring strong leadership and organizational (skills), and Scott has the academic background,” school board President Gerald Holda said. “We’ve talked to him, and he comes highly recommended by almost everybody in Jackson County.”
Koziol’s father, Joseph, is a former superintendent of Northwest Community Schools.
Koziol said he preferred not to discuss future plans for the district until a contract is official, but he believes his experience makes him a good fit.
“My role as an education consultant out at the ISD has allowed me to have a lot of experience working with school staff and administrators, and I’m fairly familiar with the way the education structure is set up there,” he said.
Koziol, who is in his third year at the ISD, requested a leave of absence from his job there Tuesday.
Holda said the leave of absence will allow Koziol and the school board to determine if he is a long-term solution for Michigan Center.
“This will give him some hands-on (experience) to see if this is really what he wants to do,” Holda said.
Holda said the district still plans to choose a company to conduct a search for a new superintendent in case either side decides to go in a different direction for the 2011-12 school year.
