Comets stay perfect in Big Eight
The Jonesville offense doesn't seem to be slowing down and its pitching staff has yet to let up.
Ben Stemen went five innings and held Concord to just two hits and one run on Tuesday in the Comets 12-1, five-inning mercy-rule win over the Yellow Jackets.
Stemen was also the key run-producer at the plate, with two hits and four RBI.
Casey Clow drove in three runs, while Jay Bearden added three singles and Joe Kroa, John Sigler and Kyle Flint all had two hits.
The Comets are now 13-2 overall and 7-0 in the conference.

Hornets annihilate Pilgrims
Two shortened no-hitters and 35 runs in six innings was more than enough for the Hillsdale Hornets baseball team Tuesday.
They beat Lansing Christian 19-0 and 16-0 on a night where 11 different Hornets drove in runs, and Scott Lantis and Dillon Dirth both dominated on the mound.
In the opener, 11 second-inning runs did the Pilgrims in, and literally everyone contributed for Hillsdale.
Lantis struck out six and walked one in three innings, while adding a double and RBI at the plate.
Aaron Blanchard drove in three runs and had a triple, while Drew Byers scored three runs and added an RBI.
Kirk Putnam, Mitchell Gabriele and Dillon Dirth all had a double and drove in a run, while Tyler Vandeberghe had two hits and one RBI.
In the second contest Dirth struck out seven and walked one to earn the win.
Putnam and Lantis both had two hits and three RBI to lead the offensive surge.
Brandon Quick also added two hits and drove in a run, after tallying an RBI in the first contest.
Darren Wisely was good for two hits and an RBI.
Although the Pilgrims didn't present a great challenge Tuesday, Hornet head coach Chris Adams said piling up league victories is ultimately the goal in the team's quest for an SMAA crown.
"We're right where we want to be, controlling our own destiny," Adams said. "Tonight was good for everybody but we have some work still to do with four games at the end of this week."
The Hornets are now 7-1 in the conference, tied with Western in the loss column, but several games up in the wins column. They have six league contests remaining.



SCAA rivals split doubleheader
Pittsford downed Camden-Frontier 5-4, before the Redskins returned the favor with a 3-1 win in a match-up of two of the SCAA's top squads.
In the opener, Pittsford pitcher Seth Weber allowed just four hits to earn the win, while Kurtis Tyler suffered the loss for C-F.
The Wildcats' Clark Pelham had two hits, as did Jake Jividens for the Redskins.
In the nightcap Dan Nye tossed a three-hitter to lead C-F to victory.
Cody Krasny took the loss for Pittsford.
Tyler and Brady Nusbaum both knocked two hits for the Redskins.
C-F is now 10-4 overall and 7-2 in the league, while Pittsford is 9-3 in SCAA play.

Rangers back over .500
After a slow start to the 2009 season the Reading Rangers are back over .500 and still in contention for a Big Eight crown.
The Rangers downed Union City 3-2 and 5-4 Tuesday to improve to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
In the opener Union City scored two in the first inning, but wouldn't score again and Reading's third run, in the fourth inning, stood up.
Kyle Gibson was the winning pitcher, tossing a complete game, allowing six hits and two runs, while striking out three.
Chad Berger and Sam Creel delivered key doubles.
In the nightcap, a Joe Hubbard RBI single with two outs in the seventh inning capped off the win.
Union City knotted things at four in the top of the seventh, with a two-run homer off Alex Eastwood.
Eastwood went six innings and allowed six hits and three earned runs, with two strikeouts in all.
Sam Creel earned the victory, coming in for relief duty.
Eastwood had two hits and every single in the Ranger lineup got on base.

Softball
White no-hits Concord
Kelly White pitched a no-hit gem Tuesday, a catalyst for the Jonesville Comets 15-0 win over Big Eight foe Concord.
The game lasted just three innings, thanks to the MHSAA's mercy rule, but the Comets did enough damage for seven innings, or more.
Jonesville scored two runs in the first, 11 in the second, and two more in the third to earn the victory.
Jenna Kast led the way offensively, with a double and four RBI, while Ashlende Teller drove in three runs.
Kelsey Aemisegger added a double, single and two RBI, and White had two singles and drove in two runs.

Rams, Spartans both take one
North Adams-Jerome beat up on Waldron 12-8 early Tuesday, but the Spartans more than returned the favor in a 19-2 rout.
In the opener, N A-J's Megan Brown earned the pitching victory, scattering 12 hits and striking out two.
She helped her own cause with three hits, including a double.
MacKenzie Price was the losing pitcher, giving up nine hits, while striking out six.
Kelsey White had four hits and four RBI in the loss, while Ashley Jagielski, Jennifer Doriot and Tori Michael all had two hit.
In the nightcap Price was the winning pitcher, limiting the Rams to six hits, while striking out five.
White had two more hits, a triple and RBI included.
Doriot added two hits and drove in a run, while Jagielski hit two singles.
Brown added a double for N A-J in the loss.
