Baseball

Orioles make  another stride
The Quincy Orioles have positioned themselves for a legitimate shot at the regular season Big Eight championship. Their 8-1 win over Athens Thursday, coupled with Jonesville's loss at Reading puts the Orioles at 8-1 in the league, while Jonesville is 9-1, with a doubleheader between the two schools set for Thursday in Quincy.
On Tuesday, Lance Hammil earned the win pitching, going seven innings, allowing just one run (none earned) and three hits. He struck out seven, while walking six.
The Orioles big hit on the afternoon came from Shane Rider, who had a bases-clearing three RBI double in the seventh. Bryan Craig added two hits, including a double.

Comets lose first Big Eight tilt
The Jonesville Comets baseball team is no longer perfect in Big Eight play and Reading and Quincy could not be happier.
Reading downed Jonesville 11-6 Tuesday, meaning the Comets are now 9-1 in the conference, just a half game ahead of Quincy.
"We thought we should have had Jonesville the first time we played them, so we had that going for us. But really we just hit the ball well and played good defense, and it was a good win for us," Reading head coach Rick Bailey said. "If only we could have won one more at Homer last week we would've had a shot at a three-way tie at the top with Quincy and Jonesville."
Comets starter John Sigler lasted just two-and-a-third innings, giving up eight runs (four earned) and eight hits in the loss.
Ryan Dillon had a big day for Reading, earning the win on the mound and adding a single and triple, with two RBI  at the plate.
Reading broke open a 3-all tie with a four-run fourth and added three more in the sixth for insurance.
Tyler Ferrier had two hits and two RBI, while Alex Eastwood and Chad Berger each had a pair of hits.
Jay Bearden had four singles and an RBI for Jonesville, Joe Kroa had two hits and drove in four runs and Ben Stemen also drove in a run.
After starting the season 2-6 the Rangers have won 10 of 13 to improve to 12-9, including 6-3 in the league.
Jonesville is 15-5 overall.



Redskins take two in SCAA play
Camden-Frontier used a smattering of home runs to beat Waldron 6-1 and 9-5 in an SCAA doubleheader Tuesday.
In the opener, it was Andrew White, a freshmen who was a late addition to the lineup card, who sparked a rally. His two run homerun, the first longball of his career was part of a four-run second inning for the Redskins.
Kurtis Tyler was dominant on the mound, limiting Waldron to three hits and striking out 12.
He also added three hits at the plate and Dan Nye had two hits.
Jeremy Flickinger suffered the loss for Waldron.
In the night cap Jake Jividens had his second two-homer contest of the spring and Brady Nusbaum added a solo blast in the C-F win.
Nusbaum was also the winning pitcher, striking out seven and walking three.
Josh Fellows had three hits for Waldron and Dylan Emens suffered the loss.

Softball

Rangers pull out extra-innings win
Kasie Owens eighth inning RBI single was the final dagger in a back and forth battle between Reading and Jonesville, which the Rangers ultimately won, 8-7.
Owens also picked up the win pitching, although she walked eight, while striking out two.
Kelsey Aemisegger took the loss for Jonesville, striking out 10 and walking nine.
Allison Simmons had two hits for Reading, who only tallied six hits in scoring eight runs.
For Jonesville, Kelly White had a double and two RBI, Ashlende Teller tallied a pair of doubles and two RBI and Brooke Nichols had two hits and drove in two runs.
Reading is now 12-11 overall and 4-5 in league play, while the Comets are 4-6 in Big Eight competition.

Redskins, Spartans split
Waldron really needed MacKenzie Price Tuesday — the results say so.
Price was masterful in a four-hit shutout with five strikeouts, out-dueling C-F's Morgan Warfield (10 K) , in a 2-0 win in the opener; Price gave up eight runs and left in third inning due to injury in the second contest, a 12-3 Redskins victory.
In the first game a Kesley White RBI double was all the Spartans would need.
In the nightcap Megan Schwartzengraber was the winning pitcher and she also had two doubles, a home run and five RBI.
Jessica Hines added a single, double and two RBI.
Tiffany Michaels had two singles for Waldron.

Culbert throws no-hitter for Pittsford
It was the tale of two outings for the Wildcats Tuesday.
In the opener at Colon, Pittsford garnered just one hit and lost 10-0, only to turnaround and win the nightcap 2-1.
Marisa Hamilton suffered the loss in the first game, walking seven and striking out three.
But shortly thereafter, Nicole Culbert pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts and two walks, and Colon only got on the board via four Wildcat errors.
Sam Cole and Jessica Plessinger both had a single and double in the win

Track and field

Academy teams win league titles
The Hillsdale Academy boys and girls track and field teams both secured SCAA Division II regular season crowns with wins over Litchfield Monday.
The Academy girls beat Litchfield 96.5-38.5 and the Colt boys were victorious 81.5-51.5 as both teams finished the season 5-0 in conference meets.
On the girls side Heather Lantis won both the discus and shot put for the Academy, while the Colts Erin Gieske was tops in the one- and two-mile runs.
The Academy also won the 3200 meter, 1600 and 800 relays.
On the boys side, Hillsdale Academy's Peter Sullivan was tops in the high jump and long jump, while Ethan Smith won the 100 and 200 dashes.
Litchfield's Terry Lawler was victorious in the shot put and discus.

Reading continues to dominate
The Reading girls track team stayed perfect on the season and the Ranger boys added another victory as well on Monday.
The girls downed Concord 103-34 and the boys edged out the Yellow Jackets 77-60.
For Reading, Brooke Schmucker won the shot put and discus and Jessica Fink was number one in the long jump and high jump, while also running on the winning 1600 relay squad.
Tessa Pridgeon was a member of the winning 1600, 400 and 800 relay teams, while also winning the 100.
Brittany Couch won the 400 and 200 dashes for the Rangers.
On the boys side Trent Morris took home titles in the pole vault and 110 hurdles.
Reading's Matt VanNuys was tops in the 200 and part of the winning 800 and 400 relay teams as well.

Comets rout Trojans
The Jonesville girls beat Homer 96-29 and the Comet boys were 93-43 winners on the road Monday.
There were three Comet girls who won multiple events at the meet: Amber Smith in the shot put and discus, Kristyn Jones in the 300 hurdles and 100 hurdles and Tulshi Patel in the pole vault and 800.
All four Jonesville relay teams topped Homer's girls.
For the boys, Jonesville's Brett Dailey won the shot put and discus and Evan Clendening was the best performer in the 300 hurdles and 110 hurdles.

Girls tennis

Hornets pound Vikings
HIllsdale completed their dual meet season with an 8-0 whitewash  of regional foe Bronson Monday.
At first singles senior Katie Brown shut out her opponent, as did fellow senior Rhylie Brown at fourth singles. Senior Carissa Shalosky wasn't far behind at second singles with a 6-2, 6-0 drubbing of her opponent.
The first and third doubles teams of Courtney Harring / Chloe Jelenc and Kaitlyn Rodgers / Taylor Mann were both victorious in three sets.
Also winning for the Hornets was Sarah Lovinger, at third singles and the second-doubles team of Elise Allen and Marla Beavers, both with straight set victories.
Rounding out the match was the fourth-doubles tandem of Liz Kimball and Sarah VanOrman who also had a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Since becoming partners two weeks ago they have not lost.
The Hornets next action is Friday at the state regionals hosted at Kellogg Community College.

Boys golf

Quincy wins Big Eight title
The Quincy Orioles boys golf team capped off a 20-0 regular season with a 20-shot win over runner-up Jonesville at the Big Eight Championships Monday.
They finished with a team score of 174 at the par-36 Concord Hills Golf Course. Jonesville shot 194 and Concord took third with a 209.
The individual conference champion was Quincy's Ben Olmstead, who shot a 40, three shots better than teammate Tyler Gardner who took second.
Jonesville's Mitch Miller and Quincy's Tyler Palowski tied for fourth overall with 45s.
The Comets concluded the Big Eight season second overall, going 15-5.

Girls soccer

Girls move on in SMAA playoffs
The Hillsdale girls soccer team won 2-0 behind a pair of goals from Andi Cochran, to advance to a matchup with Western in the SMAA playoffs on Thursday.
Cochran scored on a penalty kick and added another goal later and Megan Bailey was the winning net-minder.
The Hornets are now 8-6 overall and 3-3 in the league.
