Chargers diamond update: Baseball falls to Grand Valley, softball splits with Tiffin

Baseball loses two
Facing the number one team in all of Division II college baseball led to two more losses for the Hillsdale College baseball team.
The Chargers lost both ends of a Wednesday night doubleheader at Grand Valley State University, 12-1 and 10-4 in Allendale. Hillsdale is now 8-15 on the season and 1-9 in the GLIAC. Hillsdale will have to play another nationally ranked team this weekend, facing a three-game series at Ashland starting Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of the opener to break open a close game.
The GVSU pitching staff held Hillsdale to just four hits in the game, those coming from the bats of Adam Connell, Brandon Hubbard, Jesse Smith and Anthony Giarmo. Smith drove in Giarmo for the team's only run of the game.
In game two, Hillsdale scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game 3-3.
But Grand Valley scored two or more runs in each of the final three innings to pull away for the victory.
Freshman John Bonvillian hit his first collegiate home run in the game for Hillsdale. Clay Stephens went 2-for-3, while Jamie McNeill drove in two runs. Hubbard also had two hits and scored twice.
The Lakers are now 26-3 on the season.

Softball splits pair
In a scheduling quirk, the softball teams from Hillsdale College and Tiffin University met for the second time in three days Wednesday afternoon. In the latest doubleheader between the teams, this one held in Ohio, the teams duplicated their Monday results from Hillsdale, each winning a game.
Tiffin won the first game 5-2, with Hillsdale rallying for a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
The Chargers are now 9-11 overall and 3-5 in the GLIAC this season. Hillsdale returns home this weekend for two doubleheaders, hosting Wayne State Saturday and Saginaw Valley State Sunday.
The Chargers' game two win was sparked by another member of their talented freshman class.
This time it was Jen Berlet who delivered a bases-loaded double in the third inning as part of a 4-RBI day for Hillsdale.
Her hit helped Hillsdale grab a commanding 4-1 lead in the contest.
Berlet finished 2-for-3 with a solo home run in addition to her three-run double. Her 4 RBI are a career-high for a single game.
Senior Jamie Vandenburgh turned in another fine performance on the mound in getting the win. She tossed all seven innings, giving up just one earned run and six strikeouts, with no walks.
Senior Dana Gould continued her excellent offensive start to the season by going 2-for-3 in the game.
Sophomore Jordan Kellie, who hit a solo home run in the first game of the day, had a hit, an RBI and a run scored in the nightcap.
Senior Alyssa Grewcock had a hit and three walks in the opener for Hillsdale.
